Lucas Reiner has been widely exhibited internationally over a career spanning three decades, having produced several notable series of chromatically variegated paintings reflecting his perennial inspirations ranging from contemporary urban trees to traditional spiritual themes in diverse media including oil, tempera, and watercolor in addition to dry point etchings, monoprints, photography, film, and sculpture.

In 2023 the Athenaeum Center for Thought and Culture (Chicago, Illinois, USA) presented the world premier exhibition of Lucas Reiner’s The Stations, fifteen large-scale paintings inspired by the traditional devotional narrative of Christ’s passion, death and resurrection. Originally initiated by an invitation to produce a Stations of the Cross for St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C., in the wake of his mother’s death Reiner embarked upon a series of watercolor studies in 2008, subsequently working with the renowned German printer Clemens Büntig (former assistant to master printer Aldo Crommelynck, Picasso’s last printer) to produce a series of fifteen dry point etchings, which were recently exhibited at the Green Door Gallery (New York City, USA) in 2022. Over the course of seven years this body of work culminated in The Stations paintings, comprised of poetically evocative renderings in raw tempera pigment, marble dust, dispersion, water and wax on canvas of trees encountered by the artist in Italy, Germany, and the United States. Through the transformative power of art transcending religious affiliation, The Stations paintings embody the universal human longing to comprehend suffering, loss, and the passage of time, and serve in building bridges of understanding across cultural backgrounds and worldviews.

A solo exhibition of Reiner’s “Renaissance Removal Paintings” was presented at Studio La Cittá in Verona in 2026. “I Have Been in Many Shapes”, also in 2026, was presented at Galerie Biedermann in Munich. A solo exhibition of Reiner’s “Himmelsleiter” paintings was presented in 2017 by Galerie Biedermann (Munich, Germany), and a selection of these works (in conjunction with sculptures by Johannes Esper) was presented at Galerie Nordenhake (Berlin, Germany) in 2019. Reiner’s works were included in “Dos Colectivos”, an exhibition presented by the University of California’s Fisher Museum of Art (Los Angeles, USA) and Instituto de Artes Gràficas (Oaxaca, Mexico) in 2018.

A monograph of Reiner’s work titled Los Angeles Trees was published by Prestel in 2008, It was selected by The Los Angeles Times as one of its “Favorite Books of 2008” and features artworks produced over several years that visually explore the formal collision between organic growth and the harsh strictures of contemporary urban life embodied by the trees that line city streets.

Reiner studied at Parsons School of Design and the New School for Social Research (New York), Otis College of Art and Design (Los Angeles), Parsons School of Design and the American College (Paris). He has been invited to serve as visiting artist at numerous institutions, including Art Center College of Design (Pasadena, California, USA), Oberlin College (Cleveland, Ohio, USA), the American Academy (Rome, Italy), Università Iuav (Venice, Italy), and Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa (Venice, Italy), among many others.

Reiner’s work is represented in public and private collections, including the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (California, USA); the Santa Barbara Museum of Art (California, USA); the West Collection (Oaks, Pennsylvania, USA); Staatlichen Graphischen Sammlung (Munich, Germany); Kunstmuseum Magdeburg Kloster Unser Lieben Frauen (Magdeburg, Germany); the Diözesan Museum (Freising, Germany); Colección Jumex (Mexico City, Mexico); and the American Embassy Collection (Riga, Latvia).
