FIREWORKS (2002-2010): Watching a Fourth of July fireworks display on the beach in 2002, and later at the Festa del Redentore in Venice, Italy, my attention was drawn to the afterglow of the pyrotechnics, in particular how the residual cloud of background smoke would suddenly become illuminated by the subsequent explosive flashes to reveal glimpses of amorphous, shadowy forms that receded into the darkness as the fleeting light slipped away. In confronting the paradox of representing a form where none permanently exists, my paintings and drawings of fireworks strive to capture the ephemeral.
