HIMMELSLEITER (2017-2019): Having grown up in Los Angeles where the sky is frequently blue, I’ve found the sky in Berlin often appears as very close sheets of opaque gray, seemingly undifferentiated in tone on certain days. However the more one looks, the more one sees; the layers and depth of strata come into focus as subtle modulations and variations become visible. Rather than producing a depiction of the Berlin sky, I was interested in painting a visual field that appears to be still, while changing experientially. As gradations in color and form emerge and then recede, horizontal lines appear inviting the viewer’s gaze into a space of contemplation.
