The Green Door Gallery in Brooklyn, New York, is presenting an exhibition of the complete series of Lucas Reiner’s fifteen Stations etchings. The exhibition is open for public viewing on Sundays from 2 – 5 p.m., March 27, April 3, and April 10, 2022.
Originally commissioned by St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C., this unique Stations of the Cross follows the traditional devotional narrative recounting Christ’s ultimate passage through death to redemption and is comprised of poetically evocative renderings of trees encountered by the artist in the U.S., Italy, and Germany. Reiner worked closely with the renowned printmaker Clemens Büntig (formerly assistant to master printer Aldo Crommelynck, Picasso’s last printer) using the spit bite aquatint technique to obtain a particular quality of light in the grounds of the final plates to produce this series of fifteen dry point etchings.
The exhibition’s curator is Rev. Paul Anel, who was first introduced to the Stations etchings while visiting Reiner in Los Angeles. As an ordained a Roman Catholic priest with graduate degrees in philosophy from Institut de Philosophie Comparée (Paris) and theology from the Pontifical University Angelicum (Rome), Father Anel has worked extensively with nonprofit organizations internationally. In 2008 he moved to the U.S. to work with the International Center for a Culture of Compassion in upstate New York and is currently based in Brooklyn, leading an extensive outreach program to the artist community, organizing studio and gallery visits, art discussions, and film screenings.
The Green Door Gallery is located at 206 Skillman Avenue in the Williamsburg district of Brooklyn, New York, on the corner of Humboldt Street and Skillman Avenue (Graham Avenue stop on the L subway line). As an initiative of the Roman Catholic Divine Mercy parish, this nonprofit gallery was created to connect artists and the local community by celebrating art that is spiritually uplifting with the goal of fostering a community culture of friendship.
